WHIPPOORWILL ARTS FELLOWS
Brittany Haas is widely regarded as one of the most influential fiddlers of her generation. She began touring with Darol Anger’s Republic of Strings at 14, and soon after released her debut, self-titled solo album, produced by Anger. Haas went on to record and perform with such acts as Steve Martin, Crooked Still, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Bela Fleck, Dierks Bentley, Tony Trischka, and more. She was a member of the house band for radio show Live From Here hosted by Chris Thile, and just finished a year as Artist-in-Residence at East Tennessee State University’s Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Roots Music program. Americana Music Association’s 2020 Instrumentalist of the Year, she currently tours with instrumental quartet Hawktail, which includes bassist Paul Kowert of Punch Brothers, guitarist Jordan Tice, and mandolinist Dominick Leslie. Brittany was awarded a Whippoorwill Arts Fellowship in 2020.
Paul Kowert grew up in Madison, Wisconsin. Upon graduating from The Curtis Institute of Music in 2009, he joined the Grammy winning band Punch Brothers and moved to Brooklyn, NY. Since then they have made four albums, contributed music to The Hunger Games, This is Forty, and Inside Llewyn Davis, appeared on Austin City Limits and the Coen Brothers’ concert documentary "Another Day, Another Time," and various other fun things. He was a band member on the NPR radio show Live From Here during its first year. In addition to Punch Brothers, Paul has toured and recorded with Mike Marshall's Big Trio, David Rawlings, and Hawktail, his own project with longtime collaborators Jordan Tice, Brittany Haas and Dominick Leslie. Hawktail released their third album, Place of Growth, in August 2022. Paul lives in Nashville.
