Whippoorwill Arts is working with the Musicians Union Local 6 (AFM), Independent Musicians Alliance and Jazz in the Neighborhood on the Fair Play Initiative, seeking to ensure that when public dollars are used for live music, money actually gets to the musicians.
While municipalities often spend millions of dollars per year on live music, musicians remain poorly paid, if they are paid at all. Pay standards are essential for all working musicians, many of whom are paid, on average, less than they were in 1985. We are working in San Francisco, Richmond, Oakland, and Mountain View to set base pay rates, professional protections, and equity hiring for musicians. We are a diverse, multi-genre, union, non-union, intergenerational, multiethnic collective led by folks with deep roots in the Bay Area music scene. Together, we are a grassroots coalition of musicians working together to improve our working conditions.
