We are pleased to announce The Shiz Rock will be with us on the 28th. From the soul of the south comes The Shiz, New Orleans conscious, hippie, lesbeaux folk-rock and soul. Lilli Lewis and her wife Liz “The Shiz” Hogan formed The Shiz in 2009 when Liz had been denied employment with a wilderness therapy program in Arizona on the grounds that her marriage was not recognized by that state. Facing the start of an economic crisis after having spent all their savings attempting to relocate for that job, the couple saw forming a rock band as the only reasonable thing to do.
Now a poet who teaches literature at The University of New Orleans, Liz is a self-declared folk artist to the bone with a penchant for silt rivers and old songs in minor keys, Hogan says they found their indie rock alter-ego because “being an artist and being gay in the deep south makes people want to be loud sometimes.” When not playing living rooms and coffee houses with her wife, Lilli, lovingly known as the Folk Rock Diva, is a universal dignity enthusiast turned nationally touring artist spreading the gospel of “practicing radical decency.” Her latest release Americana was an NPR All Songs Considered top 10 pick with her single “Copper John” featured in Rolling Stone as a “Song You Need To Know.” The Shiz’s critically acclaimed Meet You In the Morning is available at https://theshiz.bandcamp.com.
We will celebrate the music and heritage of AANHPI families featuring Taimane from Waikiki, Honolulu, HI, and Crying Uncle Duo from Alameda, CA.
Join AARP Oregon and attendees across the U.S. for a free virtual concert on May 31st, 2022 at 9:30 p.m. ET | 8:30 p.m. CT | 7:30 p.m. MT | 6:30 p.m. PT - AARP membership is not required.
AARP Oregon, in cooperation with Whippoorwill Arts, is delighted to welcome Taimane and Crying Uncle Duo:
Taimane has established herself as one of the leading ukulele players in the world, known for her fierce and inventive style of play that transcends traditional views of the instrument. Hailing from a musical Polynesian family, Taimane began playing ukulele at age 5. By age 13, she was playing regularly in the show of the legendary Don Ho.
Taimane is truly redefining Hawaiian music. This virtuoso artist—whose name means “diamond” in Samoan—is taking the ukulele to new heights while blazing her own trail in the process.
Crying Uncle Duo is Asian American brothers Miles and Teo Quale from Alameda, CA.
They are both national award winners and have performed at the Grand Ole Opry. The brothers, who are also National and State Champion fiddlers and pickers, were 2019 Freshgrass Festival finalists in the fiddle and mandolin contest categories.
Renowned mandolinist David Grisman says, "Check out Crying Uncle! We dig what they are doing! The future of music is in good hands here!”

Athens, Georgia native turned New Orleans Folk Rock Diva Lilli Lewis is a voice for the
voiceless in Americana, her third full album for Louisiana Red Hot Records, lauded by NPR,
Rolling Stone, Offbeat Magazine and the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Trained as an opera
singer and classical pianist, singer-songwriter Lewis has been a composer, producer and
performing artist for over two decades. She has been known as the Folk Rock Diva since
performing in the Folk Rock band The Shiz, founded with her wife Liz Hogan.
Lewis issued three previous releases on Louisiana Red Hot Records where she serves as VP
and the Head of A&R: The 2018 The Henderson Sessions, 2019’s We Belong, and the 2020 My American Heart Red + Blue EP. In 2020, Lewis also released a single she co-wrote, co-
produced and performed — the “Mask Up” anthem for a public health campaign from Louisiana
Red Hot Records and WHIV-FM featuring New Orleans favorites Kirk Joseph, Glen David
Andrews, Roland Guerin, James Andrews, and Erica Falls.
Since the shutdown, Lewis has performed a powerful set for the Kennedy Center’s Arts Across
America series, sang "My American Heart" for a voters' rights benefit (where Broadway star
Mandy Patinkin compared her voice to “the color of light”), and performed for WWOZ-FM's
Piano Night benefit alongside celebrated artists like Jon Batiste, Ivan Neville.
Her full ensemble, known at home as the Lilli Lewis Project, refers to itself as “not so much a
band but rather a pan-generational cult of radical decency” willing to traverse any musical
terrain, bearing the spirit of days when everyone still seemed to believe music could change the
world.
As the story goes, Lewis’ mother was told her baby probably wouldn’t survive because of lung
trouble in utero. Lewis now uses those same lungs to bring what she calls sacred songs into
profane spaces, and though she’s abandoned trying to define her sound, she hopes her
audiences leave her performances knowing two things: that they are brilliant as they are, and
that they have the ability to use their own brilliance to make a better world.
